Spires & Steeples Arts and Heritage Trail

The Spires and Steeples trail, from Lincoln Cathedral to St Denys' Church, Sleaford, brings together the rich history, heritage and local stories of the area.  It has many beautiful artworks, churches, interesting landscapes and picturesque skies. The name refers to the Spires of the churches being the landmarks to which visitors make their way and to the rural sport of Steeple chasing. It is also recognition of the important part they have played in the lives of these communities as well as how they are a reflection of the times, families and cultures that created, altered and rebuilt them.

By clicking on the links in the left hand side menu bar you can explore the route and some of the remarkable things North Kesteven residents have achieved.

Walkers please note: Temporary closure of footpath in Ruskington

The footpath off Station Road which crosses over the railway via a blue footbridge is temporarily closed.  Your alternative route is to follow Station Road round a left hand bend until you reach Priory Park, a residential development.  Turn left into Priory Park and keep straight until a gate leading to the field.  Turn right into this field and you have rejoined the Spires & Steeples route.

Take the Spires & Steeples Challenge on Sunday 17 October 2010
Now in its third year, the Spires & Steeples Challenge, a 26 mile/13 mile run or walk along the route is well and truly on the calendars of runners and walkers nationwide.  Last year the Challenge attracted over 400 participants, coming from as far away as Edinburgh, Swansea, Liverpool and London as well as regional and local towns.  And we're expecting even more people this year!

Can you help?

But an event of this scale cannot possibly flourish without a dedicated team of volunteers. We're looking for more volunters to help this year.  You could act as a marshal along the route, record the walkers/runners at the checkpoints or simply help with handing out refreshments and cheering the participants along.
We have checkpoints at Branston, Metheringham, Digby, Ruskington and Leasingham Moor as well as as the Lincoln Castle start, Metheringham Playing Fields start and Sleaford finish.  If you live in or near any of these villages and can help out on the day, please contact the Event Organiser by telephoning 01522 694 353 for more detail.
